It’s been exciting to see an influx of new subscribers to Handful of Earth over the past several weeks. In light of new readers, coupled with the fact that I’ve been traveling this week, I thought this Friday would be a good time to welcome those of you who have recently subscribed to Handful of Earth. I’ll return to regular Weekly Groundings next Friday.
If you’re looking for a brief outline of what to expect here, the About page is the best place to start. As you’ll see, Handful of Earth currently features four categories of content: Weekly Groundings, Monthly Musings, Essays & Articles, and Reviews & Interviews. Weekly Groundings are published on a weekly basis on Fridays and Monthly Musings are published during the final week of each month. I recap recent content in every Monthly Muse, so if you’re new to Handful of Earth and want to get a general sense of the publication, browsing through past Monthly Musings is a good way to do that.
If you’d like to dig a bit deeper into the Handful of Earth archive, I’d recommend reading two Excavations from January of this year. The first summarizes each essay and article published through December 2023. The second does the same for reviews and interviews. These Excavations of previously published work can be used however you see fit—as a reminder of content to return to, a prompt to read further, or a document to share with friends and family who may be interested in Handful of Earth.
The scope of Handful of Earth is, admittedly, quite broad. “Culture, politics, and technology” is hardly the laser focus that tends to create brandable niches on the internet. However, my own interests are themselves very broad and I refuse to let the imperative of branding impinge upon my ability to speak to a wide range of themes and issues.
Why am I mentioning this? If you’re new here, chances are you will find some aspects of Handful of Earth more relevant to your own interests than others. Please feel free to engage with what is useful to you and set the rest aside. That said, I hope that you also find the variety of topics covered on Handful of Earth to be a breath of fresh air in a media landscape replete with formulaic responses to audience capture.
One last note: The readership at Handful of Earth hails from a range of political ideologies and backgrounds. The collapse of the left-right divide has been a consistent theme on this publication, but, because of our collective political conditioning, some of the content may appear, at first glance, more “left” or “right” leaning. In these cases, I would encourage you to keep an open mind to deeper logics and connections that challenge the reductive culture war narrative that dominates our contemporary political climate.
Welcome, again, to Handful of Earth. If you’ve made it this far and plan to stick around after reading this post, please consider sharing it with a friend:
Thank you for providing your provocative and informed analysis. People certainly need, these days, a reliable lens with which to see through the strategically manufactured bullshit.
Vincent, this is really well done.
