In testing a drug, especially a vaccine, on humans, the only way to perform one is to artificially constrict the testing set to those who want the drug. The moment the trial is plausibly successful, it becomes a moral imperative to unblind the study and give the drug to those in the original placebo arm as well. This means that the long term studies needed to pick up issues that might not immediately be apparent are precluded.
It’s interesting that Offit recommended mandates around Aug 25th. FOIA documents indicate that the FDA knew that vaccine effectiveness was waning by Aug 17th.
